Farewell to Old Git Bert. 51

A sad day as six of the Old Gits went down to Bridgwater to the funeral off one of the Old Gits.  Bert had been a keen rider when I first joined the Old Gits five years ago. Fondly remembered as a very gentle man who was liked by all who met him.  He was very deaf which made communicating with him difficult at times.  His biggest asset to our group was he always carried a pair of secateurs with him and he was the scourge of any overhanging twigs or brambles that encroached onto the cycle paths.  Sadly altzheimers overtook him a couple of years ago and he had to give up his cherished electric bike.  Getting lost a couple of times (the Police had to be notified) and falling in a canal made the decision to quit easy. The photo below shows Bert, with the gang, at Caffles tea stop.  Bert is in the white top in the foreground.

The last few months, Bert's health deteriorated and sadly he passed away. It was his funeral yesterday and six Old Gits attended, in our lycra gear ( with the blessing and support of the family I would add). Four of us cycled to the church, two others made the journey by car.  This is us outside the church just before the ceremony.  It was a baking hot day and after the wake at his daughter's house, we rode back to Weston.  We covered 51 miles in all, 30 there, and 21 back (we got lost going due to a faulty Garmin device).  A good day overall and it was an honour to attend on behalf of the Old Gits who knew Bert couldn't make it.  RIP Bert.

From L to R, Norman and Dave at the back, Big Al, Arnie, myself and Geoff .
