With some Old Gits on the windy Levels 36

Met up with four other Old Gits to go down to Sweets Cafe near West Hay on the Somerset Levels.  It did mean cycling against a fairly strong SE wind but getting back should be fun!

 Mudgely Hill

Having battled through Rooksville and Mark there was a long steady climb of about 200 ft to get to the top of Mudgely Hill, a bit of a lump on the edge of the Levels near Wedmore.  Ian took this photo of l to r Pete, Simon, yours truly and Andy. This was taken just before the swift descent back down Mudgely Hill, watching out for gravel, potholes near the S bend half way down.  A bit hairy this one, using brakes sensibly, 32.7 mph was recorded on Strava.

Sweets Cafe

Reached the cafe Ok and it was a welcome relief after 20 miles into the wind.  Quite a few cyclists in there, some looking extremely sporty and had cycled to the cafe from some distance away.  You can see all the bikes through the window. Tea and cake went down very well.

Another puncture

In all fairness, this was expected!  Checking my tyres before starting, there was a cut on the rear wheel tyre that looked a bit dodgy, possibly a glass cut.  Debated whether to continue on it and as the tyres I use are Gatorskins, allegedly fairly puncture proof and 'armoured' thought it was worth the risk.  Wrong!  Travelling back from Sweets, wind behind us, bowling along, the rear tyre went down quite rapidly.  Set to and changed the tube, Ian had a patch to put on the inside of the tyre to strengthen the weak cut and the job was done.  Used the fancy compressed air purchased some time ago and it worked like a dream.. Must have taken a second to inflate the tyre to a high pressure (checked it later, it was 95 psi).  Amazing.  Got home fine so that tyre is going in the bin!

A very good ride back, wind driven, and the score at the end was 35.9 miles.  Well over the weeks target now.
