Free tea and cake at Barton Camp 24

Never refuse a free cup of tea!  About 12 months ago, one of the Old Gits invited me to an annual breakfast to be held at Barton Camp near Winscombe.  That offer went straight into the diary and today was the day.  Weather was fine so left Weston just after 9 and rode out through Puxton and Sanford to Barton Camp.  Back to Weston through Bleadon.

Strawberry Line

Used the Strawberry Line to get from Sanford to Winscombe.  Well, it does cut out a fairly steep hill. Took the gamble that it wouldn't be too muddy and that proved a good choice.  Was hoping to find the trees in the best of their autumn colours but not too be unfortunately.

The work goes on

Wessex Water have been working on this water pipeline for months now.  Not only has the Strawberry Line been affected but local commuter roads as well.  At least the tunnel, a bit further on from this picture, is going to be refurbished and the lighting upgraded.

Barton Camp

Founded by the Bristol Children's Help Society in the late 19th century, Barton Camp provides support for disadvantaged children from the Bristol and North Somerset area. It also lends out its facilities to corporate and other organisations.  Annually, the Weston Athletic club have a President's Breakfast after a run through the Mendips and cyclists from the WAC cycle to the venue via various routes.  A full breakfast was on offer but did not want to push it, settled for a cup of tea and some delicious home made fruit cake.  Thanks for the invite Dave.

The 24 miles done today took the week's total to 138.  Think a day off tomorrow is called for.

  1. No need to worry about tokens, Ken, when there is no cost involved. Perhaps we should try and plan our rides around such “freebies” in future!
