Old Gits Reverse Route 26

Taking one of the alternative routes today, the 'reverse' which goes north through Kewstoke and Sand Bay, to Wick St Lawrence and Caffles at Hewish.  After tea, continuing through Puxton and Banwell returning to Weston.  18 Old Gits turned out to play today in pretty good weather for the time of year.

Kewstoke

Taking the Old Toll Road out of Weston it follows the coast line to Sand Bay.  A bit of a roller coaster, we are mindful of the fact that 18 riders strung out (some drivers think we should be strung up) can be a bit annoying we stagger the start and try to leave reasonable gaps for cars to pull in.  Leaving just before 9, the traffic has lightened considerably though.  The last bit of the road has a kick in it before the New Castle Cafe so an ideal opportunity to stop and have a breather and regroup.

An unfortunate re route

Leaving Caffles and going through Puxton we experienced a lot of mud and manure on the road by one of the farms.  They were muck spreading and leaving most of it on the road it seemed. Some 2 or 3" deep in places it was treacherous.  One of the chaps braked for an oncoming van, slid and he came off.  His ankle suffered more than the bike!  Possibly a sprain, he soldiered on to the outskirts of Weston where he organised a lift home.  To avoid a steepish climb on his behalf, we re-routed through Banwell and this is the main body of blokes going up the gentler climb north of Banwell.  The errant farmer was later reported to the council.

That incident spoilt a good ride in good dry weather.  I added a bit on at the end to finish on 26 miles.
