11th March 2014 Willoughby Workout 41

Weekly ride out with a couple of friends, Graham and Mark. Putting some more layers on after being so cold yesterday. Heading into the cold wind today, making for the Willoughby Cafe on the A45.

Willoughby

Met up in Cubbington Village and went out through Offchurch, Long Itchington, Stockton, Shuckborough before turning away from the wind to get to Willoughby. This plaque stands in the centre of the village and shows various landmarks including the church, cricket club, duck pond. There is also a quill pen and parchment but unable to find the significance of that.

 Willoughby CC

A nice little pitch to the west of the village. The large shell you can see was presented to the club as recognition for the excellent saving work they did during the war.

All Saints Church, Leamington Hastings

Built around the end of the 10th Century, the current building stands on the remains of a Norman church.

The Plough at Eathorpe (deceased)

We were surprised, on the ride back, to find this popular pub was all boarded up.  Built in the 18th century as a coaching inn serving the Fosse Way which is just yards away, the Plough has been a very popular restaurant, serving good food since the early 1970s.  The only pub in the village of Eathorpe, a real shame that it has closed down.

A chilly ride today, especially the first half, into the wind. 41 miles to add to the total.
