8th January 2013 Farewell Rotorua

Slight change in the weather but still warm and dry. This will be the last ride in Rotorua before shipping out to Aukland. Doubtful if the opportunity will arise to get out and about during the two days I am there.

Subway

Leading out of Rotorua towards the airport is highway 5. At one point the cycle track from town to the Redwoods crosses it and a underpass has been built for walkers and cyclists. In bright sunlight, it was prudent to be aware of some big rocks lining the path as going from bright to dark caused temporary blindness! More so as a sulphuric river ran alongside it.

Office Cafe

From the bridge, found a track that runs through the Redwoods to Long Mile Road where this cafe is situated. Had a cup of tea in there, and sat in the managers office. I think the other rooms were, payroll, HR Dept and other such names. A novel way of doing it. Notice the copper coming out the door with his cup of tea. Do you think I should send this to his sergeant?

Another Boardwalk

Going back to Rotorua along the cycle path, went over another boardwalk. This one is designed to keep the public off the more dangerous areas of thermal activity. It is possible for the volcanic action to weaken the upper part of the rock leaving a seemingly firm footpath only a few millimetres thick. Does not take too much to fall through then. In fact there is a piece in the local paper today about some chap who fell in a hot mud pool and died.

Pak'n'Save

A little bit further on, took a slight detour to get this shot of the local supermarket. A lot different to the ones in the UK. No frills attached at all, very basic, but the prices do reflect that, there are some real bargains in there.

Not a bad ride for the last one. About 10 miles today.
