28th November 2013 Lowsonford Lollop II

A bit of a grey, dull today, but at least the temperature has increased a tad. After spent the morning sorting out my slow broadband speed, took off for Lowsonford. Went out through Beausale, Rowington, and came back via Hatton and Norton Lindsey.

Lowsonford

Not much to photograph today, done just about all there is to be done around this way. That is, apart from the charming little Lock keepers cottage, at the side of the canal at Lowsonford. It was common, in the hey day of the canals, for there to be permanent lock keepers at busy locations, and accommodation was often provided on site. With the decline in commercial traffic, the trade has now died out and these cottages are privately owned, often as holiday lets. This one is called Lengthsman's Cottage and dates from about 1812. It was built for the 'lengthsman who maintained not just the lock, but the stretch of canal up to the next lock. This one is a rare survivor of its type on the Stratford upon Avon canal. By the way, this one is a holiday let (4 nights from £234). Thanks to my wife Sue for the research into this.

A nice route this one, taking in a few hills and climbs and mainly on little used country roads. 25.4 miles today.
