10th November 2013 Weston Super Mare

Took the mountain bike to Weston Super Mare today hoping to get out with a couple of the grandchildren for a spin along the sea front.

Mini Parade
Went out for two rides today. the first with Carmen,  7 years old and later on Tommy who is 11. Riding along the main parade, spotted these minis all lined up. Possibly a group of mini enthusiasts out for a day by the sea. You don't actually see many about nowadays despite over 1.5 million being sold in Britain alone. Thanks to Carmen for holding my bike up.

Donkey rides

Traditional on several of Britain's beaches, donkey rides have been here for literally donkey's years. Pun intended. They were out in force today, grabbing the cash off unsuspecting kids. Carmen tells me she has been on one of them, one called Pepper. Think I will stick with the bike.

Weston Pier

Although there has been a pier at Weston for  110 years, this one is relatively new, the original having burnt down in 1930 and again in 2008 .  Now rebuilt at a cost of £39m, the new one is  quite an entertainment centre  with arcades, a small theatre and a funfair.  A magnet for tourists, the prices are expensive.

The Silica

Built as part of a big regeneration programme for Weston, this is just outside the main shopping area at Big Lamp Corner.  At night there are LED displays on it. At the base is a retail kiosk, a bus shelter and a public information display. It is supposed to represent man's harmony with the sea.

A total of 9 miles today with the two rides.  A nice sunny day as you can tell, but the wind was a bit keen. The kids never felt it, but Grandad did!
