17th August 2013 Leamington Loop

Feels like Autumn today, dull sky, very breezy and a definite shift downwards in the temperature.  A bit strapped for time again today so a trip around the usual route, over to Leamington, for an hour will fill the bill. There is a certain shop in Leamington that should provide a good photo opportunity for the blog. It is a place that has been on the radar for some time.

The Jet but no Whittle

Part of this well cycled route is through part of old town Leamington. This pub, in Brunswick Street, was originally built and named as the Jet and Whittle in honour of Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor and developer of the Jet engine, an engine that revolutionised air travel. Sir Frank was born in Coventry but later moved to Leamington where he attended Leamington College for Boys. For some reason, the owners of the pub, or the brewery, dropped the Whittle from the  pub's name. Outrageous I say, considering that the jet engine helped to bring the second world war to an early close.
There was also a plaque to Sir Frank in his old school. The school has now been sold and developed into a 'retirement village'. The question is, is the plaque still there? Some research is needed into this.

Further down from the Jet was the premises where the focus of this ride was. Not today though, the shop is closed on a Saturday! Still on the books then. Never mind, a useful 13 miles to add to the log.
