16th February 2013 Navigate Newbold

Certainly better weather this weekend. No need for layering up, the roads are dry and Newbold Comyn beckons. Must make a slight detour today to check on something.

Alfonso's Cafe

I meet every Wednesday with some mates and we have breakfast at various places around this area. One place we have not been to is Alfonso's, in Station Approach, in Leamington. Well, that is what it has been called for yonks. It has obviously been taken over.  As I live the nearest, I was given the task of doing a recce on the place.  Job done, although it is now Simon's Place. The menu has been photographed and e-mailed on for the others to decide whether a visit next Wednesday is on or not.

The Subway

This tunnel runs from The Railway Station in Warwick Old Road to The Pump Rooms Gardens at the lower end of the town. For years, it has been the scourge of graffiti artists and it has not been a pleasant experience to walk through. Visitors to the town could not have been impressed with their first visit. Some bright spark came up with the idea of getting the local graffiti merchants to paint some murals to decorate the place. This has been done and there are about a dozen, showing places and events relevant to Leamington, displayed along the sides of the subway. There is no more graffiti, job done.

 Gascoynes Paper Shop

For as long as I can remember, Gascoynes newsagents has been in High Street Leamington, right in the heart of Old Town. Going past there today, it looks as if the place has closed down. Another nail in the coffin for the small retailer in the high street.

A good ride today round one of my more regular routes, from home to Newbold Comyn and back home via the Myton Road and Warwick. Just under 13 miles in all.
