2nd January 2013 Warwick University

On a mission today. Yesterday, cycling down Cryfield Grange Lane I saw a sign saying 'Cyclists crossing'. This was never there in my running days, and I was intrigued to see two cyclists crossing at that point on a new cycle path. It did not seem prudent to explore that on the road bike so a mission was born.

Cyclists Crossing

Although this location is about 5 miles from home, it seemed worthwhile to go that far to see where this new track led. I suspected it would go somewhere from the Kenilworth Greenway to either Burton Green or the University. Only one way to find out. The track itself  has a good surface and winds through a very pleasant rural area. Heading north, before too long, it was evident that it was leading through some of the halls of residence at the University of Warwick. Passing through the sports fields the track finished at Gibbet Hill Road by the main security gate. Best have a wander round the university then.

On Campus

All the main buildings are well signposted but no evidence, as yet, of a tea room. Best keep looking.  The campus itself seems deserted but give it a couple of weeks the hordes will be back I am sure. Found a Costa by the Arts Centre but that was not my cup of tea. Cup of tea, get it!

Warwick Arts Centre

The Arts Centre itself is a very popular centre for entertainment. Some big stars appear here and the range of plays and concerts is impressive. Best leave this place fairly quickly in case the desire to do hard sums or read Chekov becomes overwhelming. Back onto the  Gibbet Road and back to the cycle track to see where the other end terminates.

Rural Sculpture

Cycling back towards Kenilworth I had the good fortune to meet up with a former colleague who is also retired. By coincidence he had chanced upon this new track last week and was in the process of checking it out as well!  This piece of artwork was alongside the track on the approach to the Greenway. At the Kenilworth end of the cycleway we were both on strange ground and found that it came out in Lower Lady's Hill. Job done, mission accomplished. Certainly worth a revisit in the future. We went our separate ways with a possibility of meeting up in the future for more rides.

A good day today. Certainly opened up possibilities for the future. Total distance covered today was 14.48miles. The weather was kind, although turning round to cycle back home it was a shock to find a not so warm headwind most of the way back.
