Old Gits to West Hay 36

A bit of a spin out with three Old Gits heading down through the Somerset Levels to West Hay, the ultimate aim being the Sweets Tea Room for a break.  Met up on Weston Prom and the dark clouds looked a bit ominous as we set off.  Had a few spots of rain then the sun came out and it was blue sky for the rest of the trip.

Moooove along there

At about the same time the sun came out, so did the farm animals.  Heading towards Lympsham, on Rectory Way, there was a herd of cattle being moved by some farm workers.  Three in all with a landrover, a pick up truck and a quad bike.  It wasn't until they reached Wick Lane and they turned right were we able to carry on.  Many apologies from the workers which was very courteous.

Totton Drove

Out through Mark and took the lane behind the church to get onto the Somerset Levels proper.  Halfway along Totton Drove, stopped for a photo shoot and to look at the flooded fields.  This is looking north towards the far distant Mendips and the water is a lot higher than we have seen it before.  Little wonder with the amount we have had this past week or so. L to R, Andy, Phil and Pete. This was only about a mile from the Sweets Tea Rooms at West Hay  our intended destination.

Then there was sheep

After tea and a big slab of fruit cake, carried on a circular route through Burtle, back to Mark and towards East Brent.  On the Harp Road near Northwick, had another temporary hold up behind a flock of sheep,  this time herded by a tractor, a pick up and the ubiquitous quad bike. The delay was quite welcome actually as the ride from Burtle through Mark had been into the wind, and keeping up a reasonable pace was quite tiring.  10 minutes behind these renewed our energy levels.  From here it was fairly easy through East Brent, Lympsham again, and over the Uphill Nature Reserve to Weston.

A good morning's work that, covered 36 miles.
