A walk down to Birnbeck Pier 3

Another nice but windy day.  Took a walk out this morning, north along the prom and paid a visit to Birnbeck Pier, a disused, derelict structure that is the only pier in Britain that connects the mainland with a small island.

Marine Lake

At the northern end of the prom is a small man made lake that caters for the holiday makers.  A safe bathing area, it also, by means of a causeway, holds the sea back when the tide goes out.  If the tide was right in, this photo would not be possible.

Birnbeck Pier
The photo says it all really, the structure is a wreck and the more that heavy seas batter it, the worse it is going to get.  It will cost millions to restore it to its Victorian glory and therein lies the trouble.. The owners and the council do not seem prepared to sit down and talk this through.

The Italian Gardens

A big refurbishment programme has been going on over the last few months on this area just off the main street.  It officially opened today with live bands, street performers, mime artists and a fire breathing dragon.  Not a bad turnout really although the weather was a big help.  It was at this point the old knee was singing a bit so cut the walk short and caught the bus back home.

3 miles today.
