Woodspring Wander 20

Another cold one today, nice and sunny though, take advantage of the weather to explore around the Sand Bay area of Weston.

Batman

Spotted this the other day in York Road Weston, a small side street down by the pier. It looks as if the wall has been painted recently around the graffiti. Nothing to suggest what this is about.

Save the pier

A big local debate is going on about the fate of Birnbeck Pier. This is the only one in England that connects the mainland with an island and has fallen into a really sad state of disrepair.  The locals are campaigning for the owners of the pier and the local council to ensure it does not collapse.  To help them in their cause, a fund raising event was held today at the 'safe' end of the pier. Had a cup of tea there and made a donation to help the cause.

The Pier

This is what they are fighting for. It is a real mess and another couple of windy storms may well see it off. Such a shame.

Woodspring Priory

This priory was founded in the 13th Century and dedicated to Thomas Becket. Over the next 100 years the small communitu here built a church and monastic lodgings.  It was dissolved in 1536 and sold to local farmers and in 1968 it was bought by the National Trust. After 20 years restoration and under the ownership of the Landmark Trust, it is now rented out as holiday homes.

Good ride today. Clocked 19.9 miles which will go in the diary as 20!
