26th December 2013 Paradise Valley Plod

That's it Christmas over. Get the bike out again. Looks from the maps like a nice circuit around a bit of a mountain (big hill) so that is well worth a look.

Road Safety

Nice to see that the local authority take road safety, in particular cyclists seriously. Surprisingly this road which runs through Paradise Valley, is an execllent cycling road, no pot holes, some decent hills and varied scenery. Despite that, only saw one other chap on a bike when I expected a lot more, especially on Boxing Day.

New Zealand Cattle

It is what New Zealand is famous for, apart from the Rugby. Dairy products and lamb. Haven't seen too much of either but these cattle were spotted on the Paradise Valley Road and looked well content.

Paradise Valley Spring park
At this wild life park on the Paradise Valley Road, visitors can interact with a variety of indigenous wildlife such as deer and pigs. Some may be hand fed. There is trout, both rainbow and brown in the streams to wind through the park. There is also an elevated tree top walk, six metres high, in the forest canopy.  They have lions as well. Don't quite know where they fit in with the local fauna and flora but you can watch them being fed at 2.30 daily.

No cake or tea!

Towards the end of the ride, diverted into Ngongotaha for some vittles. The only place that was open was this sports bar and cafe. Lots of betting going on in there but unfortunately the little chinese man behind the counter did not speak English too good. He did not recognise cake but nodded at doughnut. Unfortunately he had neither tea or cake. Only 6 miles to go so it was not a problem.

A good ride today. A bit hilly around the back of Mount Ngongotaha but well worth the effort. Clocked 17 miles in all.
