8th April 2013 Bourton Bash

Out today for a longer rider with Graham. Met him in Cubbington and then headed into the wind going east.

Wappenbury

Left Cubbington and went past the village of Wappenbury. Outside of the village, on the side of the road is this little cemetery. Could not see any gravestones, although Graham thinks there are two graves in there. It was Graham thought that this was the smallest cemetery in the world. Certainly the worst kept! I have checked on Google and there are a few contenders for this accolade. No mention of Wappenbury. Best leave here in case they want another customer.

St Peter's Church Bourton and Draycote

Carrying onto Bourton, came across this pretty little country church. Apologies for cutting the top of the spire off!

War memorial Bourton

Just a short distance away from the church is the village war memorial honouring those who lost their lives in previous wars. Just a short distance along the lane behind it, a very good view of Draycote Reservoir can be seen.

Lych Gate Birdingbury Church

This lych gate is at the entrance to Birdingbury Church. Lych is the saxon word for corpse and traditionally, in the middle ages, when most people were buried in shrouds, the dead were carried to the lych gate and placed on a bier where the priest conducted the first part of the funeral service under its temporary shelter. Another place to rush away from!

A good spin out today despite the first part against quite a chilly east wind. After tea and toast at Long Itchington Diner going home was much easier. 28.3 miles today.
