17th December 2012

Not a bad day for a ride today. Unfortunately, not able to get out till mid afternoon so a short one today around Warwick making sure I get home before lights are needed. There has been a hint of a challenge from my son David. A very short text with the message 'Christmas tree'. That will do. It does make a difference if there is a goal to the day's ride and having to think about where to go. So, christmas tree it is.

Pre Xmas tree
This was the first one spotted on the way into Warwick. Hinton's Nursery, opposite the Saxon Mill is only 1.5 miles from home but this seemed a good place to start. Take this anyway, not sure what else is about. What would be ideal is a traditional tree with loads of lights on. The day was getting overcast so they should show up nicely. Onward and upward into Warwick Town.

Tree no lights!
Not what was expected at all. This one was in the main square in Warwick and is called the 'Warwick Lights of Love'.  Cards are available to leave messages for loved ones and there was a service around the tree held yesterday. A nice idea at this time of year. There was one other I saw on my travels but that was a scratty thing, no lights on so left it. Must bear this theme in mind over the next few days. If it means venturing out in the dark to capture one lit up, so be it.

Victorian mailbox 2

This post (mail to my american friends) box is another very old box, made in 1856, and is the second one in Warwick. This is at Eastgate and is used daily.

Eastgate Arch, Warwick
Looking through the arch into Smith Street, this was part of the town wall in medieval times. Views of Eastgate itself will be appearing on a later date.

A short 7.5 mile ride today to Warwick and back.  Tried to make this more aerobic by choosing a route that takes in more hills than usual.  At least the weather held up. Didn't want to do too much today anyway. Off out for a slap up Chinese meal tonight and the last thing my friends want to see is me crashed out, face down, in a bowl of noodles.

  1. Re: the Post Box...why is it that we have Royal Mail but call it the post and the Americans have US Postal service but call it the mail? Over to you!
