Old Gits Friday Ride to Wedmore. 33

In a bit of a rut lately alternating between two destinations without changing the way we get there.  Over coffee last Tuesday, (a 23 miler with 14 Old Gits) we discussed a slightly hillier way to get to one of our favourite cafes riding part of the way alongside the Mendip Hills, the green bit on the map below.. There are two or three 'pimples' along here, 200+foot climbs which should make the day more interesting. The weather was a big factor today, a fresh SSW wind didn't help us and the rain was a little more persistent than the expected April showers.  Heading towards Wedmore via Chapel Allerton we were  diverted with a couple of serious road diversions for internet cable laying. The firm doing this part have the job for Bristol to Plymouth and the 2 1/2 year contract has had to be extended by a further 3 years because of the complexity of arranging all the road closures and diversions.  At one stage we ended up in a very smelly farmyard which did my lungs a power of good!

Got to Wedmore in a state of bedragglement (If that isn't a proper word, it should be) with the persistent 'light rain' ever present.  Full wet weather gear was definitely the order of the day. Carried on to the top of Mudgely Hill and flew down the other side, 215' down to 8', round the corner and we were at Sweets cafe.  The tea and cakes went down very well. From l to r, Colin, Simon, Andy, a very serious me, andSimon. On the next table were two elderly couples struggling with a giant crossword and we had a bit of a laugh helping them with that.

Carried on then and took the shortest route back to Weston over the levels but the wind seemed to be agin' us rather than helping us.  Apart from a couple of short, sharp, showers, the rain eased off a bit.  Finished up with a tally of just under 33 miles so pleased with that.  That make 74 for the week so far.
