Not a bad day but the wind from the NE is bringing a bit of a chill with it. Plan B then. Catch the train to Nailsea and ride home with the cold wind behind. Can also call in at Clevedon and have tea with my daughter. Caught the 1040 train and had a free ride! The ticket offices were closed, only one automatic machine was working and with a few people waiting to use it had to leave it when the train pulled in. Sat with the debit card and railcard ready and never saw the ticket collector at all. British Rail I owe you £4.50
Tickenham Church
Leaving the station at Nailsea, took a back route to get to the Clevedon Road. Just before the main road is the parish church of St Quiricus and St Julietta. I've never heard of them either. Julietta was was a widow travelling with her 3 year old son Quiricus in 304 AD in Tarsus. She was recognised as a Christian, arrested and tortured whilst Quiricus was made to sit on the knee of the governor Alexander. Quiricus attempted to reach his mother and in doing so, scratched the face of the governor. This angered Alexander and he threw the boy down some steps and killed him. Julietta thanked God for granting martyrdom to her son. Alexander was infuriated and ordered that she be beheaded. So now you know.
Clevedon Triangle
Passing through Clevedon, stopped to take a picture of the clock tower in the town centre. Look at that blue sky, good job you can't feel the wind whistling round the corner.
Clevedon Pier
A legacy from the Victorian era when steam boats plied a regular trade from Somerset to Wales. This pier has been carefully renovated and is a popular tourist attraction. It has also featured in films, TV and music videos.
Drinking fountain.
One of several in Clevedon, this is the most ornate. Another legacy of the Victorians, this one is in the side road opposite the pier.
Taking the train was a wise move. With the wind behind, the chill was lessened and made the 26 miles almost spring like in the sunshine. Recorded mileage for the week is 143.9 miles. That is gross!
