Out to West Ham, the Somerset version 35

Another cold one today, cold but a clear dry day with plenty of sun.  It was only just above freezing this morning in the NW wind but wrapping up well kept the cold out.  Headed south onto the Somerset levels through Mark and went through the hamlet of West Ham which is half way between Burnham on Sea and Glastonbury.  Turned west then to Burnham and the Bay View Cafe.

Cripps River

This little bridge is in Long Moor Drive near Burtle and crosses the Cripps River.  This is a man made river, only 1.6 miles long and connects the River Brue with the Huntspill forming part of the drainage system for the Somerset Levels.  It was also part of an ill fated canal that ran from Highbridge to Glastonbury, built in the early part of the 19th century it was only viable for a few years.  Look at that blue sky as well.

Highbridge Marina

Tide nicely in today but nobody going out at all.  This is taken from the path that runs through the salt marshes alongside Apex Park.  Saw a wading bird near here, possibly a redshank but not sure.  On the sea front at Burnham stopped for a chat with a bloke bird watching who was looking out for a caspian gull that has been seen around here.  Checking this out, they have been coming to the UK of late but you would have to be a very keen watcher to spot one of these amongst all the other types that are around.

After tea and toast at the Bay View, made it back on 35.5 miles.
