Over the Mendips. Second time in a week! 40

Getting into some serious training now with a visit from the 3cyclists in 10 days and the Great Western Ride in July.  Visitors to so Somerset cannot miss Cheddar Gorge and the Burrington Combe is on the Great Western Ride route after 20 miles it is fairly tough going.  The plan is get some hill work in, hence up Burrington Combe twice this week.  For the end of April it was quite cold this morning, so much so that breath was visible at the summit.

On the top

Cut through the hamlet of Charterhouse to get to Cheddar and took this photo to show how rugged it is on the top.  Lots of limestone outcrops sticking up and a very popular area with riders and walkers. Hard work getting up to the top but the four mile downhill makes it all worth while.

The Gorge

Luckily the road down is not too bad.  A couple of sharp bends need to be negotiated with care but exhilarating to say the least.  Sheep graze on these hills so pays to be mindful of them.  None seen this week, they must all be lambing.  Had a cup of tea in Cheddar, mainly to get warm!  From there went back to Weston via Axbridge and East Brent.

Back in Weston had to mooch a little bit down the prom to bring the mileage up to 40.
