17th May 2013 Charlecote Cruise

Wasn't too sure where to go today until a mate asked if I fancied breakfast at Wellesbourne airfield. Seemed like a good opportunity to combine a ride with a social event. Got the bike out at 9am and rode over there for 10.

The Bench

On the way to Wellesbourne, went through the village of Barford. A Facebook friend, Caz Bench, asked if I saw a bench near to Lambert Court, a subject of a recent blog. Well Caz, there is, right by the river bridge. It was put there in 2007 to mark the opening of the new Barford By pass. A lovely spot for it actually. The new by pass bridge can be seen in the distance. As a coincidence, Caz now tells me that Bench means river dweller. Spooky.

Theboots

Even spookier were these boots! I saw them on the way out just sitting, (standing?), complete with socks in them, in the road by the kerb. A bit odd. An hour later, on the way back they were still there. Camera out then. Just in case you wonder, they were far too big for me!

Hill Close Warwick

Next to warwick Racecourse is a renovated Victorian garden. They have been on this site since the mid 19th century but were neglected. In the mid 1990s work was started on the restoration and they opened to the public in 2005. These are a rare example of Victorian detached leisure gardens which were originally located on the edge of towns. Local people have worked hard to restore these and they are of significant historical and educational importance. Looks well worth a proper visit.

Warwick Golf Centre

Situated on Warwick Common, in the middle of the racecourse is this par 3 golf course. Municipally owned, it is open to the general public. I had my first game of golf here in the early 1970s. I lost!

An interesting ride today, about 24 miles. A highlight was the sausage sandwich and two cups of tea at the airfield. Thanks for the invite Bob.
