13th January 2013 Around Warwick

Thanks to all the visitors to this blog. I am amazed at the diversity of places you come from. The latest is the Phillipines  and I would appreciate it if any vivitors could put a little comment on as to who you are, and where you are from. 

What a beautiful morning. Clear sky, hardly any wind and temperature above freezing. Time to get the bike out. The plan is to stay fairly local, going to Warwick and Leamington.

Warwick Castle

These cars get everywhere, spoiling what should be a nice shot. This part of the castle is not accesible from here, the bottom of Mill Street. It does give an imposing and quite dramatic aspect of one of the turrets at the south east corner of the building.

Mill Street

One of the older streets of Warwick, it lies outside of the original castle walls. This street retains much of the character of a medieval street. Yellow lines and vehicles do spoil the ambience somewhat.

Cobbles

There is a downside to retain the original character of the street. Original cobbles! Not good for cycling on as I found to my cost this morning. A low gear, 1.5 mph and standing up in the pedals did the trick.

Randolph Turpin

One of the sporting heroes of Warwick, this statue was erected a few years ago in the Market Place at Warwick.  Born in Leamington, Randy was a professional boxer who won a world middleweight champion when he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951. He became a national hero at the time.  Tragically, he committed suicide in 1966.  Respect must go to his family who campaigned hard, and raised funds for this memorial.

Another good 11 miles today making a total of 84 this week, the best weekly total since taking up this hobby.
