1st March 2013 Coventry City

The BBC news said, this morning, that it is the first day of spring. Not out there it isn't. I thought it was the 21st March. Bring it on. Not too cold today actually, although the north west wind did lower the temperature a bit. Not so many layers on today either.

Canley Level Crossing !!

Well that is what this used to be. Rode into Coventry via Kenilworth and the University. Went past Fletchamstead Police Station which has been renamed Canley Police Station and, surprise surprise, it
is closed to the public. Another place where the light is on but nobody is in. This photo is taken where there used to be just a level crossing, but is now a station. You get over the track now by riding up the ramps.

The Whittle Arch

This is a large sculpture, just off the city centre, by the Motor Museum. Coventry owes much of its history to the motor manufacturing trade which has all but gone now. The museum is well worth a visit, used to be free, and traces the history of the trade in the city. Many examples of fine cars, Jaguars, Hillmans, Triumph to name a few can be seen there. The arch is dedicated to Sir Frank Whittle, a local lad, who invented the jet engine.

Football Sculptures

Coventry did have a first rate football team but its fortunes have dipped lately. Have to be careful what I say here, many of my friends support them. These sculptures celebrate football in the city and can be found under the ring road by the railway station.

War Memorial

On the south side of the city is a large park dedicated to the fallen heroes of wars past. Many trees have been planted in honour of brave soldiers and also for the many civilians that lost their lives when Coventry was blitzed during the second world war. Then, many motor manufactures had turned their attentions from cars, to war machines and the city became an obvious target for the German bombers. During these raids the Cathedral was totally destroyed. The new one has been built in the name of reconciliation. The photo is of the war memorial in the park.

An enjoyable ride today, just over 20 miles. Wind assisted second half. Not over keen riding in the city but using bus lanes does make for safer riding.
