20th December 2012

What a horrible day!  Rain and wind, not good at all. With flood warnings all over the country, it might be an idea to go and see locally what is actually above water still. Probably best to use the old bike and have a look around Kenilworth Castle, that is usually a good place to see floods.

The Ford

It was impassable. Possibly lorries and the bigger 4 X 4s may have made it but the authorities, quite rightly, had closed it off. The marker post measuring the depth read about 2'6" deep.  The raised footpath was clear so went and had a further look

Raging torrent.
The brook was certainly in full flow. The day's rain will mean it will be higher tomorrow no doubt.

The other side
This was the view from the Birmingham side of the ford. There was not many in the Castle car park. I wonder why?

The Queen and Castle
Just a few yards further on from the ford is the Queen and Castle pub. It has had a complete makeover recently and is a little bit upmarket from its Beefeater days. I like the Union Jack on the plant pots. Good for the tourists, remind them what country they are in!

Kenilworth Castle
Not the best of views of the castle this one, taken from the top of Castle Green.  An impressive site none the less, despite its sorry state, when entering Kenilworth from the north.

Joe's Overflow

Next to The Castle is Abbey Fields a fairly large recreational park. In one corner is a permanently flooded area called Joe's Overflow. A natural habitat for all sorts of birds including this seagull who obviously thinks that if fishing is banned there must be loads in here.  Difficult to get the bike in this picture.

More flooding

Cycling through Abbey Fields there were a few places where the brook had burst its banks. This was on the opposite side of the path to Joe's Overflow. Nothing on Google about the name of this flooded area. Have you got any idea? Who was Joe?

An interesting ride out today. Plenty of layers and waterproof clothing meant no problem with the rain. All in all, just under 6 miles clocked. I hope to do a long one tomorrow so a short one is ideal before then.
